Fellowship Program Implements Measurement Framework to Nurture Physician Leadership Skills
A measurement framework was developed and implemented to improve the Physician Fellowship Program, especially in the areas of business alignment, patient safety, and physicians’ soft skills.
A prominent U.S.medical school had developed a Physician Fellowship Program focused on Leadership Skills and other areas. However, it didn’t include any measurements: no skills assessment, no review of application of learned skills, and no impact assessment. Program leaders were interested in exploring how best to measure progress against soft skills, a primary program goal. To better highlight the program’s positive impact on healthcare, there was a desire to align clear measurement benchmarks and monitor performance based upon program goals and objectives.
Foleyworks collaborated with program leaders to validate the current goals and focus areas. These goals included over 29 individual business and education objectives that were focused on growing leaders, improving patient care, promoting innovation within healthcare, reducing medical risk to patients and improving finances, safety, performance, and quality.
Foleyworks supported the group in prioritizing the measurement alignment to select 10 educational objectives and focus points for the leadership elements. These initial foci included soft skill development in the areas of emotional intelligence, DEI+B, coaching, effective communication, providing/receiving feedback, team building, negotiating, problem solving within healthcare, burn out, a reduction in job-related stress, and career choices.
A measurement framework was developed. This included the measurement model, metrics, targets, owners, and the way in which data would be collected and reported.
While specific results are confidential, the measurement framework is being deployed successfully.
In addition, the program has doubled in the last year and plans to see significant growth in upcoming years. Foleyworks’ services were retained for ongoing support of the measurement aspects, as well as future expansion.
